<h1>Mount Rushmore NM, South Dakota</h1>
Die mächtige Felswand aus Granit mit den herausgemeißelten Köpfen der vier Präsidenten George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln und Theodore Roosevelt ist für die meisten Amerikaner neben der Freiheitsstatue das wichtigste Symbol von Freiheit und Demokratie. Die Idee für dieses Monument aus Stein stammt von Gutzon Borglum, der 1927, im Alter von 60 Jahren, mit der Planung und Durchführung seines Mammutprojekts begann. 1941, nach 14 Jahren finanzieller, aber auch technischer Schwierigkeiten und Gesamtkosten von fast einer Million Dollar, war die Arbeit an den 20 Meter hohen Felsenportraits beendet.
